It’s family photography season, and I’m thrilled to reconnect with many returning families and meet so many new ones! Whether you have a session booked with me or another photographer, you might have some questions about how to prepare. Wardrobe is a common topic I’m asked about, and I’m here to offer some guidance. I’ve decided to kick off a series of blog posts to help families (and anyone else seeking wardrobe inspiration) prepare for their sessions. Let’s dive into wardrobe tips today!

Coordinate, Don’t Match: While there are rare instances where everyone wearing the same color works, generally, it’s better to embrace a variety of colors and patterns. Let’s be honest—seeing everyone in jeans and white polos is a bit cheesy and outdated. Instead, opt for colors that complement one another.

Avoid Graphics and Neon Colors: Please steer clear of those bright neon athletic shirts! They can overshadow your child’s face and distract from the overall look. Additionally, graphics tend to go out of style, so it's best to avoid them.

Ensure Proper Fit: I know kids grow quickly, and you want to make the most of their clothes, but this isn’t the time for baggy or rolled-up outfits. Properly fitting clothing looks much better in photos.

Mom, This Is Your Moment! I love when moms wear dresses (if they enjoy them) or outfits that make them feel fabulous! Start by choosing your outfit first, whether it’s from your closet or a new purchase. Build the family’s outfits around yours so you can shine.

Dress in Layers: Layers add visual interest and allow for easy adjustments if the weather changes. Think scarves, hats, vests, cardigans, tights, blazers, and jackets!

Pay Attention to Shoes and Accessories: A great outfit can be undermined by worn-out shoes. Consider how your shoes will match and don’t forget about accessories like necklaces and headbands—they can add a delightful pop of color!

Create a Pinterest or Inspiration Board: This can help you visualize the colors and patterns you love, as well as any trends that catch your eye.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask Your Photographer for Help: We’re here to support you! Don’t be shy about reaching out for guidance.

Enjoy this process! If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments. :)
